A Floor That Looks Like Nothing Else in the House

Metallic epoxy floors use pigments with fine metallic particles mixed into a clear epoxy. As the epoxy is poured and worked, the pigment flows and settles into swirls, ripples and veins that catch light from different angles. No two floors look the same. In Bismarck homes, they are most popular in finished basements, home bars, theater rooms and heated shops that double as a hangout space.

How the look is made

The slab is ground and repaired, and a primer or base coat goes down. Then we pour the metallic layer and move it with rollers, trowels, brushes or solvent spray to create the pattern. Some floors look like polished stone or marble. Others have bold swirls or a lava-like texture. We finish with a clear topcoat for wear resistance. Before the job, we talk through colors and look at sample boards so you have a clear idea of the result.

Where metallic works and where it does not

Metallic floors are smooth and glossy. That is beautiful in a dry basement or a dealership, but it can be slick when wet. We usually do not recommend a full gloss metallic floor for a garage that sees heavy snow and brine. If you want a metallic look in the garage, we add an anti-slip additive to the topcoat and talk about how the floor will wear under sand.

Sunlight and color

HomeGuide rates standard epoxy's UV resistance as poor to fair, and metallic floors near large windows or patio doors can shift in color over time. For those rooms, we use a UV-stable clear topcoat.

Moisture still decides the outcome

A metallic floor is still a coating on concrete, and a basement slab with moisture coming through will cause blisters no matter how good the finish looks on day one. We test before we recommend a system and use a moisture-tolerant primer when the readings call for it.

Design choices

  • One color or a blend of two or three
  • Subtle stone look or bold, high-movement pattern
  • Gloss, satin or textured topcoat
  • Borders or color changes between rooms

Your estimate includes a walk through these options so the price matches the design you want.

Getting the room ready

Metallic floors take longer to install than a flake garage because each layer has to cure before the next. Plan on the room being closed for a few days. Baseboards are usually removed or protected, and doors may need trimming if the new floor raises the height slightly. Furniture, appliances and anything stored on the floor have to come out. We go over the schedule at the estimate so you can plan around it. If the space has floor drains, a sump pit or a radon suction point, we coat around them and keep them accessible.

Metallic Epoxy Floors Questions

How much do metallic epoxy floors cost?

Bob Vila puts metallic epoxy at about $5 to $12 per square foot. Floors with more design work, moisture treatment or repairs fall toward the higher end.

Are metallic epoxy floors slippery?

A full gloss metallic floor can be slippery when wet. We add an anti-slip additive to the topcoat where it is needed, and we steer metallic floors toward drier spaces.

Can I put metallic epoxy in my garage?

You can, but a smooth metallic floor will show sand scratches and be slick with snowmelt. In garages we usually recommend flake, or metallic with a textured topcoat.

Will it look exactly like the sample?

The colors will match, but the pattern will differ, since every metallic pour moves on its own. We show you several sample boards so you know the range of looks.
