Acreage Floors Around an Old Railroad Siding
Epoxy flooring in Menoken is mostly about outbuildings. The community began in 1873 as Seventeenth Siding on the Northern Pacific. It was renamed Blaine, then Clarke's Farm when the post office opened in 1880, and Menoken in 1883. The railroad never liked that name and called its station Burleigh from 1891 on. Today Menoken is a small census-designated place of 78 people in 2020, spread over about 2.24 square miles. Most properties around it are acreages with a house, a garage and at least one shop.
Before the slab was poured
If your shop is fairly new, it went through Burleigh County's accessory building rules. The county requires a building permit for any accessory building over 120 square feet and requires most accessory structures to sit on a floating slab. Animal-only buildings are the exception. A floating slab is a good base for a coating, but it can move a little with frost and drying. We look for those movement cracks, and we fill them with a flexible material where they are still active so they do not crack through the new floor.
What we install out here
- Shop & Pole Barn Floor Epoxy: a thick, high-solids build for tractors, side-by-sides, trailers and a shop truck
- Epoxy Flake Floors: for the attached or detached garage at the house
- Polyaspartic Floor Coating: when the shop has to be back in use quickly
- Basement Floor Epoxy: for the lower level of the house, after a moisture test
Shops that store grain-hauling trucks or sprayers see dust, chaff and chemical drips. A satin or textured topcoat hides dust between sweepings and resists the slip a glossy finish has when wet.
A little history down the road
About a mile and a half northeast of town is the Menoken Indian Village State Historic Site. The State Historical Society dates the village to around AD 1200. It held roughly 30 earth-covered houses inside a palisade and ditch enclosing nearly 1½ acres, and it became a National Historic Landmark in 1964. It is open year round with free admission if you want to see one of the oldest sites in the county.
Planning the job
Rural shops are often large, and some are unheated. We schedule unheated buildings for warmer months, or we bring in heat when the product calls for it. Before the estimate, it helps to know the building's square footage, whether it has floor drains, and what will be parked or stored inside. We measure and test on site and send a written quote that names each coat.
Questions we ask at the estimate
- What gets parked or stored here, and how heavy is it?
- Is the building heated all winter, some of the time, or never?
- Are there floor drains, and where does water collect?
- Has the floor ever been painted, sealed or coated?
- Do you want the color to hide dirt or show it so you can clean it?
The answers decide film thickness, texture and topcoat. A shop that houses a sprayer needs a different finish from one used as a woodworking space or a place to keep a boat over winter. We write the system on the quote so you can see exactly what you are paying for.
Menoken Notes for Shop Owners
- Four names in 18 years. Founded as Seventeenth Siding in 1873, the town was called Blaine, then Clarke's Farm in 1880, then Menoken in 1883. The railroad renamed its station Burleigh in 1891.
- County slab rule. Burleigh County requires a building permit for accessory buildings over 120 square feet and says all accessory structures except animal-only buildings must sit on a floating slab.
- Menoken Indian Village. The state historic site about 1½ miles northeast of town dates to around AD 1200, held about 30 earth-covered houses, and was named a National Historic Landmark in 1964.

Menoken Questions
Can you coat an unheated pole shop near Menoken?
Yes, with the right timing. Each product has a minimum slab temperature. We plan unheated buildings for late spring through early fall, or we heat the space when needed. We check the slab temperature on install day before we start.
My shop floor has a few cracks from settling. Is that a problem?
Small cracks are normal on a floating slab. We fill them before coating, using a flexible filler on cracks that still move. Wide or uneven cracks that show the slab is shifting should be checked first, and we will tell you if that is what we see.
Do you coat floors with drains?
Yes. We grind and coat right up to the drain and seal the edge so water runs off the floor and into it. If the slab slopes away from the drain, we point that out at the estimate, because a coating will not change how water flows.
