Floors for an Older Town With a Growing Count
New Salem homeowners usually call us about epoxy flooring for one of three reasons: an old garage slab that has worn rough, a basement that feels damp and dim, or a shop that needs a floor that cleans up. The town has been here a long time. Settlement began in April 1882, the town was founded in 1883, and its population has stayed near 1,000 for decades. Wikipedia lists 973 residents in the 2020 census and an estimate of 1,158 for 2025.
That long history means a wide range of concrete. Some garages and basements are many decades old, patched more than once, or painted. Others are on newer lots. We plan the prep around what we find, so two New Salem floors can get very different quotes.
Safer footing for every age
New Salem's population skews older. In the 2010 census the median age was 48.2, and 29.7% of residents were 65 or older. A smooth, wet garage floor in January is a fall risk for anyone. When footing is a concern we suggest:
- A full flake broadcast, which leaves a light texture
- An anti-slip additive in the topcoat on walkways and steps down from the house
- A lighter color that makes the space brighter and edges easier to see
Snow, cold and the door line
The 1991 to 2020 normals on Wikipedia give New Salem about 44.5 inches of snow a year, a January average high near 21 °F, and a record low of −43 °F. The first few feet inside the overhead door take the worst of it. Meltwater pools there, refreezes, and works into any crack. We grind that zone carefully, fill cracks flush, and make sure the coating wraps the edge of the slab so water has no place to start lifting it.
Dairy country shops
Salem Sue, the giant fiberglass Holstein on School Hill above I-94, went up in 1974 to honor the area's dairy farmers. Farm shops around town still see milk-room supplies, feed, manure on boots and machinery. For those floors we use a shop-grade epoxy that resists chemicals and can be washed down. Flake in the high-traffic lanes gives grip when the floor is wet.
Basements in older houses
Older basements often have a thin or uneven slab, old tile adhesive or paint. We test for moisture before recommending a coating. If the slab passes, a basement epoxy or a metallic finish turns a storage room into usable space. If moisture is too high, we tell you and explain what has to happen first.
Checking with the city
New Salem has a planning and zoning committee and a building inspector. Coating an existing floor is interior work. If you are building a new garage or shop to coat later, check with the city about that construction before the concrete is poured.
A typical New Salem garage job
Day one is grinding, repairs and the base coat with flake. Day two is scraping loose flake and applying the topcoat. Then the floor cures before you drive on it. The exact times depend on the product and slab temperature, and we write them down for you.

New Salem Questions
Is a coated garage floor slippery when it's wet?
A smooth, high-gloss floor can be. That is why we usually put a flake broadcast or an anti-slip additive in New Salem garages, especially where someone steps down from the house or walks in from the snow.
My garage slab is very old and has been painted. Can it be coated?
In most cases, yes. We grind off the paint and loose surface, fill cracks and pits, and coat the sound concrete underneath. If part of the slab is crumbling or has heaved, we will point it out during the estimate.
Do you coat dairy barns and farm shops near New Salem?
We coat shop and pole barn floors used for equipment, storage and work areas. Tell us what the building is used for and we will recommend a system that fits the chemicals and cleaning it sees.
